Q&A: Teachers on how Philanthropy
Makes a Difference at TBS
We asked some of our faculty and staff how philanthropy has made a difference in and out of the classroom.
Susan Bickel, Lower School Science Department Chair
“My program would not exist without the generous support of our families. Almost everything I do uses materials that were funded by our parents when the Maglio Family STEM Center was built.”
Ryan Smith, Director of Athletics
“Philanthropy enables us to provide our student-athletes with the best experience possible. They have the opportunity to compete with the best equipment and uniforms available. Our facilities are as good and as well-kept as any in the state.”

“Philanthropy enables us to provide our student-athletes with the best experience possible.”
Jason Peck, Director of Theater
“Most Upper School shows utilize elaborate sets, costumes, and visual effects. We are able to produce professional caliber productions because of the generosity of our community. For our latest play “The 39 Steps”, our student-actors were tasked with speaking in various accents, and we were able to hire a professional dialect coach to work with them.”
Debra Perretta, Innovation Department Chair
“Donor support has allowed us to send our robotics team to the VEX World Championships three times. Most significantly, philanthropy has played a vital role in the creation of our state-of-the-art Upper School Stiles-Nicholson Innovation Center set to debut in 2027, providing an inspiring space for students to collaborate, create, and innovate.”

Leadership Society Reception
Nearly 180 parents gathered for a cocktail reception at the beautiful home of Michael and Kimberly Narlinger to celebrate philanthropy at Benjamin. The Leadership Society Reception honored donors who gave $5,000 or more during the 2023-2024 school year. Parents of Ollie in Kindergarten and Sadie in second grade, we are grateful to the Narlinger family for their early, high-level support of our capital campaign and years of volunteer work on campus.

Grade Chair Reception
The Annual Fund Leadership team met on August 27 to kick off this year’s Annual Fund. The event, underwritten by Sutter and Nugent and TBS parent and alumnus Talbot Sutter ‘07, was held at the stunning waterfront home of Benjamin parent Carolyn Broadhead. We are incredibly grateful to the Annual Fund Leadership team, led by Chris & Meghan Hurley and Kyle & Shelby Crockett, as they are an essential part of helping raise funds needed for the school’s operating budget. Fifty Eight grade callers also play a crucial role in helping increase parent participation in the Annual Fund.
